Let's get started!

Module 1: Arriving at the Campsite

Selecting and Positioning the Site

Choosing the right campsite is crucial for a smooth setup. Look for a level site to make leveling your RV easier. Ensure there are no overhead obstructions like low-hanging branches that could damage your RV. Also, check the ground for any hazards such as rocks or uneven terrain that could affect stability.

Once you've selected a suitable site, position your RV so it's easy to access all the utility connections. Make sure to engage the parking brake to prevent any movement.

Unhooking (for Travel Trailers and 5th Wheels)

  1. Chocking the Wheels: Before disconnecting, chock the wheels to prevent your RV from rolling.
  2. Disconnecting the Trailer: Unhook the trailer from the tow vehicle. Make sure to disconnect any safety chains, breakaway cables, and the electrical connection.
  3. Securing the Hitch: Once disconnected, secure the hitch to prevent it from moving.

Module 2: Leveling and Stabilizing the RV

Leveling the RV

Leveling your RV is essential for comfort and the proper functioning of appliances. Use leveling blocks or pads under the wheels if the site is not perfectly level.

  1. Front to Back Leveling: Use a bubble level to check the level from front to back. Adjust the height of the front of the RV using the tongue jack or landing gear.
  2. Side to Side Leveling: Check the level from side to side. Place leveling blocks or pads under the wheels on the low side until the RV is level.

Stabilizing the RV

Once your RV is level, stabilize it to prevent rocking or movement.

  1. Lower the Stabilizing Jacks: Lower the stabilizing jacks to the ground. These are not meant to lift the RV but to add stability.
  2. Check Stability: Ensure the RV is stable and doesn't rock. If necessary, adjust the stabilizing jacks for a firmer setup.

Module 3: Connecting Utilities

Electricity

Connecting to electricity provides power for lights, appliances, and other devices.

  1. Turn Off Interior Appliances: Before connecting, turn off all interior electrical appliances to prevent power surges.
  2. Connect the Power Cord: Connect the RV's power cord to the campsite's electrical outlet. Ensure a firm connection to prevent any issues.
  3. Switch the Main Circuit Breaker On: Once connected, switch the RV's main circuit breaker on to start receiving power.

Water Supply

Having a reliable water supply is crucial for cooking, cleaning, and bathing.

  1. Connect the Fresh Water Hose: Attach the fresh water hose to the RV's water inlet and the campsite's water supply.
  2. Turn On Water and Check for Leaks: Turn on the water and check all connections for leaks. Tighten any connections if necessary.
  3. Fill Fresh Water Tank (if needed): If you plan to use your RV's water tank, fill it now.

Sewer Connection

Proper sewer connections ensure safe and sanitary waste disposal.

  1. Connect the Sewer Hose: Attach one end of the sewer hose to the RV's sewer outlet and the other end to the campsite's sewer connection.
  2. Open the Black Tank Valve: First, open the black tank valve to empty the waste tank.
  3. Open the Gray Tank Valve: After the black tank is empty, open the gray tank valve to flush the system.

Propane and Gas Systems

Propane powers many appliances in your RV, including the stove, refrigerator, and heater.

  1. Open the Propane Tank Valve: Open the valve on the propane tank to allow gas flow.
  2. Check for Leaks: Use soapy water to check for leaks at all connections. If bubbles form, there is a leak that needs to be fixed.
  3. Turn On Gas Appliances: Turn on gas appliances to ensure they are functioning properly.

Module 4: Interior Setup

Preparing the Interior

Now that your RV is leveled and stabilized, and utilities are connected, it's time to set up the interior.

  1. Extend Slide-Outs (if applicable): If your RV has slide-outs, extend them now to maximize interior space.
  2. Set Up Interior Furniture/Equipment: Arrange furniture and set up any necessary equipment.
  3. Turn On Refrigerator and Appliances: Turn on the refrigerator and any other appliances. It may take a few hours for the refrigerator to reach the desired temperature.
  4. Open or Close Windows and Vents: Adjust windows and vents as needed for ventilation and comfort.

Safety Checks

Ensuring safety inside the RV is a top priority.

  1. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Press the test button to ensure detectors are working properly.
  2. Check Fire Extinguishers: Verify that fire extinguishers are charged and easily accessible.
  3. Ensure Emergency Exit Routes Are Clear: Make sure all emergency exits are unobstructed and easy to access.

Module 5: Exterior Setup

Setting Up the Awning and Outdoor Area

Creating a comfortable outdoor space enhances your camping experience.

  1. Extend the Awning: Extend the awning to provide shade and shelter.
  2. Set Up Outdoor Furniture/Equipment: Arrange outdoor furniture, grills, and other equipment.
  3. Check the Area for Safety Hazards: Ensure the area is free of sharp objects, uneven ground, and other hazards.

Exterior Accessories

Make sure all exterior features are set up properly.

  1. Set Up Exterior Lights: Install and position any exterior lights for safety and convenience.
  2. Place Leveling Blocks/Pads Under Tires (if needed): Double-check the stability and add blocks or pads if necessary.

Security

Ensure your RV and belongings are secure.

  1. Lock Exterior Compartments: Secure all exterior compartments to prevent theft or accidental opening.
  2. Ensure RV is Secure and Stable: Double-check that all stabilizing jacks and connections are secure.

Module 6: Final Checks

Walkaround Inspection

A final inspection ensures everything is in place and functioning.

  1. Check All Connections: Verify that water, sewer, and electrical connections are secure and functioning.
  2. Ensure All Lights Are Functioning: Check that all interior and exterior lights are working.
  3. Secure Vents and Windows: Make sure all vents and windows are properly closed or opened as needed.
  4. Verify Awning and Slide-Outs: Ensure the awning and slide-outs are properly extended and secured.

Comfort and Convenience

Make sure everything is set for a comfortable stay.

  1. Set Up Entertainment Systems: Connect and set up any entertainment systems such as TVs, radios, or speakers.
  2. Arrange Personal Items and Decorations: Add personal touches to make the space feel like home.
  3. Ensure the RV is Comfortable and Ready: Double-check that all systems are functioning and the RV is ready for your stay.
